Award Competition

The communities of Südburgenland were invited to participate in the award competition and present their measures for energy savings, CO2-reductions and lifestyle improvements. The winner of the award competition was the municipality Strem, which is strongly involved in the utilization of bioenergy.


In 2003, an association called “Eco-Energy Strem” was founded to operate the district heating plant, which currently heats 100 buildings through the district heating grid.

In 2004, the “Biogas Strem Errichtungs- und Betriebs GmbH & Co KG” was founded to produce heat, as well as electricity.


In 2005, Strem became the first municipality in Austria to use exclusively renewable energy sources for producing heat and electricity. Since 2005, Strem has been a member of the association called “ecoEnergyland”.

In 2009, Strem won the “Climate protection municipality” in the category “municipality with less than 1 500 inhabitants”.


In 2012, a small retail shop was opened on 15th November 2012 with an electric filling Station.
